The “Face House” was born in the heart of Kyoto, with Nijo Castle to the west and the Imperial Palace to the east.

FACE HOUSE
1974年、グラフィックデザイン事務所を営んでいた初代オーナーは、建築家の山下和正氏に「自宅兼事務所」の設計を依頼しました。そして完成したのは、人の顔の形をした建物。
In 1974, the first owner,
who ran a graphic design office, commissioned architect Kazumasa Yamashita to design a “home office.” What was completed was a building shaped like a human face.
京町家が立ち並ぶ町角に、突然変異のように現れた巨大な「顔」に、当時の人々はさぞ驚愕したことでしょう。
People must have been astonished by the giant “face” that suddenly appeared amidst the traditional Kyoto townhouses.
誕生から50年、「顔の家」はその姿を変えることなく、日々変わり続ける京都を見守り続けてきました。
今では、さも当たり前のように私たちの日常生活に溶け込んでいます。
For 50 years since its creation, the “Face House” has remained unchanged, watching over the ever-changing Kyoto.
Today, it seamlessly blends into our daily lives as if it were always meant to be there.
